I think if things end amicably (cause sometimes people really do recognize that "hey, we don't function on a romantic level, but we're good buds"), than it is possible to remain friends after a break up. I agree, to a point, that if children are involved you have to at least remain CIVIL, but you don't necessarily have to be friends, and most exes aren't who have kids together, as things tend to get bitter, especially because of competition with any new partners/step-parents. But be civil.
