Paul Stookey singing The Wedding Song at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney Australia in 1970.

Lyrics:

He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts
Rest assured this troubador is acting on His part.
The union of your spirits, here, has caused Him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name
There is Love. There is Love.
A man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home
And they shall travel on to where the two shall be as one.
As it was in the beginning is now and til the end
Woman draws her life from man and gives it back again.
And there is Love. There is Love.
Well then what's to be the reason for becoming man and wife?
Is it Love that brings you here or Love that brings you life?
And if loving is the answer, then who's the giving for?
Do you believe in something that you've never seen before?
Oh there's Love, there is Love.
Oh the marriage of your spirits here has caused Him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name
There is Love. There is Love.

  • What year was this recorded?

  • @ cariadw7,

    1970.

  • I'm sitting here listening to this song and getting a little misty. Not because it reminds me of anyone or it holds any special meaning.

I listen in wonderment, remembering a time when music moved me. When musicians actually had writing skills and could actually sing.

    Thanks for posting the video

  • lujous,

    My pleasure!

Yes, the quality of music certainly has changed since then hasn't it?

  • @ lujous ,

I am with you in spirit. My love to you.

  • @lujous, I totally agree with you. I'm a musician and its so frustrating to see the type of music that sells these days. It requires no talent whatsoever and thats just not fair to those of who actually have something meaningful to bring to the table.

  • Played at our anniversary 41 years ago today by dear friends. They had permission from Peter, Paul and Mary to do so, because it was before the release of the song. They had heard at a concert in Perth one same tour and asked. Of course, the tape broke down at our wedding!

  • @joelt6502 Great comment.

  • Knock it off with the "stoned" crap and just let everyone enjoy good music. How would you know that anyway---you can't prove it. Were you there? I'm sure you were not. Were you with him before he went on stage? Huh?OK What? Were you his best friend or spouse? Then shut up about it!

  • A more poignant song, I've not heard. As much as it is about love...it also comforts for those that have known love...true love do not escape from also feeling it's slings and arrows. Many thanks for posting.

  • If I ever do get married, this song will be played.

  • I walk down the aisle on my wedding day to this song..... special memories

  • i'm having this sung by a live vocalist at my wedding this Sept.

  • @galactosis

maybe, but it's a damn good song and performance
