@BodyboarDandSkatE Michael Jackson's Billie Jean was the first black video put in rotation on MTV and that was 1986. Any tunes that came out before then were doomed :(

@Buckeyecat2002 It's all about who's in power. White groups had mass exposure. The black groups were limited. Just remember the Beach Boys dad's had much more rights than The Barkays' dad. The Barkays dad's faced tons of discrimination and very little opportunity. You just can't equate. I am a white male. And it's just still awful how in my circle of fellow whites, they have nothing better to do than make racial slurs. Soul train was one of the few tools of exposure for the Barkays.

True today, but when MTV debuted 30 years ago (August 1981), they did not or refuse to play music (like funk music, such as this group The Bar-Kays) or didn't show case any videos at all by black artist. The late great Rick James called them out on it too.

What a great song! It's a shame that racist venues like MTV kept great bands like this off the air in the 80's and would only play the Kracka groups!
