GARY LUCAS: PART 9 @ PARADISO AMSTERDAM, "SOUNDS OF THE SURREAL/MONSTERS FROM THE ID" 1/22/08

Gary Lucas, "the thinking man's guitar hero" (The New Yorker), is caught performing his solo acoustic guitar score live to a screening of Rene Clair's 1924 surrealist classic short "Entr'acte" at Amsterdam's famed Paradiso, where he has performed over 20 times in his career. The evening was devoted to Gary's "Sounds of the Surreal/Monsters From the Id" program of Gary's original solo guitar scores (composed as well as improvised) played live to accompany classic French surrealist films, and clips from Gary's favorite sound horror, science fiction and fantasy films. Filmed by PaulB without benefit of stage lights which accounts for the dark image. The music shines through.

Number 9, number 9..."Mothra" finishes... and then Gary commingles intimately with his favorite horror film, Mario Bava's 1960 "La Maschera del Demonio" a/k/a "Black Sunday", which left its indelible mark on the impressionable young guitarist at a very tender age. Thrill to scream queen Barbara Steele's seductive come-on to Dr. Kruvajan before bestowing the vampire's kiss as Gary limns the action in tandem with Roberto Nicolosi's original score frisson by frisson.
