He was amazed at the detail that was already taking place on Selena's picture. No one in this class could paint like her and Mr Darcy was impressed at how he had seen Selena draw in and paint the glare from the sun, casting a white glow over the mother's face.
"This is stunning." Mr Darcy admitted.
It was a shock for Selena to hear the compliment come from his lips. Selena enjoyed painting and no one, besides Nick, had ever complimented her work. It felt new to Selena and automatically brought a small smile to her lips. "Thank you." Selena whispered.
"You're an amazing artist Selena. I feel that you shouldn't be in this class." he told her as the smile dropped from Selena's face. Mr Darcy had already been filled in by the head master about Selena's Asperger's and corrected himself. "I feel you should be in the school's AP class. It's a more advanced class for talented artists." Mr Darcy spoke as the smile came back to Selena's face. "So would you be up for it?" He asked.
"Yes sir." Selena smiled as Mr Darcy nodded and ushered Selena to his desk as he signed her up for his class.
"So, you have Art again this afternoon, yes?" he clarified as she nodded. The school had allowed her to drop foreign languages so that the poor girl wouldn't be too stressed out. "Well, I'll talk to your teachers and you'll come to this room for your Art class. You know Mr Monteith, he'll be in the class with you and will help you settle in. Your teacher's name is Mrs Adams."
"O-okay.." she smiled and nodded. "May I be excused?" she whispered, putting the manners she had been pressed into using by the orphanage into practice.
"Of course." Mr Darcy smiled. "Oh, and Selena? Don't let the other kids scare you." he smiled. "Mrs Adams is a good friend of mine, she won't let anything bad happen."
Selena nodded and blushed before rushing out and trying to find Miley. Once they met up, Selena quickly mumbled about being moved to AP Art. Miley was incredibly supportive which made Selena smile. It didn't take long for Selena to become more comfortable with speaking in full sentences to Miley though she could still only manage to look at Miley for a few seconds before looking at the floor. Also, her voice remained at a mere whisper but Miley saw the progress and felt assured that they were going to soon be quite good friends. "Let's go to Math, okay?" Miley smiled as Selena nodded and they walked to their Math class.
The rest of the day went by like a continuous cycle. New class. New students. Laughter. Mockery. Confusion. Selena didn't seem to understand anything and she was informed by fifth period that Cory and his wife had been informed about her lack of knowledge. She would have to be tutored in all of her core subjects. In fact, the only subject Selena seemed to excel in was Art.
"Are you lost AGAIN?" Nick scoffed as he saw Selena waiting outside of the Art classroom just before fifth period. "This is my class. Yours is probably down the hall or something." He sighed, not wanting to be late again. "What do you have now?"
"Actually, Mr Monteith, Selena is in the right place." a stern voice reprimanded and Nick froze, looking up to see a firm faced teacher in her late sixties standing before him. She was hunched over slightly and had some faint wrinkles and greying hair. Her glasses were rested tediously on the bridge of her nose and she was in serious danger in tripping over the length of her skirt. However, none of this seemed to frighten anyone as soon as they caught sight of the sparkle in her eyes.
"Oh, really?" Nick asked Mrs Adams who nodded, a smile playing on her lips. "Well, okay then.." he chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly and going to take his usual seat.
"Come along dear, Mr Darcy showed me your work. I have a special assignment for you today." Mrs Adams said kindly, the twinkle in her ocean blue eyes evident as she guided Selena to a stool and canvas, surrounded by equipment in the back of the room, slightly separated from the older students.
"Yes Ma'am.." Selena whispered, sitting down carefully and looking at her hands. "What would you like me to do?" she queried.
"I want you to draw something from your past. Anything you want sweetheart. Just so that we can all get to know you a little bit better without the fear of having to speak in public, okay?" Mrs Adams said kindly and Selena nodded before the kind, elderly woman toddled to the front of the classroom and addressed everyone else.
