Because you aren't good people sticking up for the poor. You're greedy people, jealously guarding your fortunes against the unfortunate. You'd rather see poor families crushed by debt and illness than be asked to pay for their healthcare. You'd rather see middle-class families ruined by medical bills and layoffs than provide financial support for them. You'd rather spend trillions on wars than feed the poor.

If Jesus were real, he'd be the first to condemn your greed.

Believe it or not, this is, at least imlpicitly, how Conservative Christians "think."

So... suppose welfare payments equal payment of part-time minimum wage employment. When a welfare recipient starts working FULL-time for minimum wage, he's be making more, so the welfare is taken away. There are people who would settle for making 30-40% less if they DON'T have to work for it! The very concept of welfare is a contradiction, a trap and a lie. Simple as that.

Actually it was Basic Income I was trying to think of- an income floor where welfare payments continue to top up any wage you start earning, until you start earning more. There are multiple ways to implement a working welfare system

If businesses are willing to take people's labour, but keep the resulting wealth as profit instead of paying workers a share they can live comfortably on, that's a huge problem for society - especially those on the bottom of the heap. Hence the need for a safety net

"Minimum wage" is a misnomer, as the REAL minimum wage here in the real world is ZERO. Raising the so-called minimum wage only widens the gap and excludes those whom employers would otherwise be willing to, well, EMPLOY. If there's no way to discern an employee's skill without taking a huge gamble and paying a lump sum of money worth FAR more than services rendered, the business owner simply won't take the risk and let the jobseeker keep walking, still unemployed as ever.

Living wage? You mean raising the minimum wage to the point where employers are unable or unwilling to hire more employees? Such policies stomp small businesses into the dirt an only favor the largest corporations, as only the likes of Wal-Mart and Starbucks can even HOPE to afford properly following that kind of legislation.

Yes, like I said, this specific implementation of welfare (where you can lose income when you find work) is political policy. It's easily fixed with the right political will, like enforcing a living wage, universal healthcare etc.

I'm not disagreeing that its implementation is flawed, but what *is* there is massively important, sheltering those at the bottom of the heap from the historically brutal consequences of a capitalist economy. So it should be moved forward, not back

You're missing the point. It's some money to make people's lives less shit, but when a welfare recipient makes a certain amount of income, that money is taken away.

It's good to know you like the THEORY of welfare, but just look at how it works in the real world. There is no way to avoid that flaw. If you work, your welfare goes away. If *I* were on welfare, I'd probably be trapped there as well.

I'd rather be paid barely enough to survive without having to work for that same wage.

Welfare isn't about 'making people happy', it's about making people's lives less shit. So they have access to basic nutrition and somewhere to live and treatment if they're sick, instead of dying in destitution like they used to (and still do in other parts of the world). Unfortunately as a society we're not at the stage of trying to guarantee everyone comfort and happiness.

People shouldn't be punished for finding work, no, but that's a flaw with implementation, not the concept of a safety net
