The Pop legacy of Ennio Morricone!:

Alessandro Alessandroni was essential to Morricone's 'spaghetti' western scores; he did all of the ethereal whistling as well as playing most of the ringing surf guitar. Zamfir perfectly captures Sandro's eerie trill with his pan pipes in this clear Morricone homage. The Maestro himself noticed and asked Zamfir to play the haunting refrains for his "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA" (1984) soundtrack.

While Tarantino was filming the "KILL BILL" films, music producer RZA heard "the Lonely Sheperd" while eating in a restaurant. The Morricone style struck him immediately and it went straight onto the soundtrack for "KILL BILL 1".
