When you start working out or get into bodybuilding, you probably hear about "compound" and "isolation" exercises. What do they do and what place should the have in your workouts?

  • Short but great video Evil. I would also add that an isolation exercise can be used right after or before a compound exercise for maximum muscle fiber destruction and blood pump. Gotta love supersets :D

  • Excellent video. I love compounds but isolations at times have their place.

  • @Evilcyber I can certainly understand why such generalization would be used, but seeing how the actual definition isn't really overwhelmingly hard to understand (though in some cases more complex to a surprising degree) I don't think it is necessary. Moreover it is a somewhat dangerous generalization, because it evokes the need to define how much muscle activation is necessary for us to say that a muscle is "worked", and what it means to "target" a muscle, both very vague and ambiguous concepts.

  • Also compouds get your heart rate up quite a bit more and burn more calories.
