Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez beamed about the resurgent Erik Morales while discussing the road ahead for the winner of the Sept. 17 WBC jr. welterweight title fight between "El Terrible" and Lucas Matthysse.

"We did a workout today with Morales," Gomez said, reaching out to BoxingScene.com from Mexico. "He's up in the mountains. He's looking great, the best I've seen in a long time. In fact, he looked better than he looked when he was training for his fight against [Marcos] Maidana. He looks good; he looks fresh, fast. It's going to be a hell of a fight with Matthysse."

The road to 140 pounds goes through unified WBA/IBF champion Amir Khan, and Gomez discussed the possibility of both men meeting the Englishman when he plans his December farewell fight in the division.

"I don't like to speak before it happens," Gomez said. "We have to see what happens in the fight. But I know if Erik wins, it would be historic. He would have to go down as one of the greatest fighters ever. He deserves all the accolades, all the attention he gets if he wins the fight.

"If it's Matthysse, we have to sit down with him and see what he wants to do, if he wants to go for another big fight right away. It's going to be interesting. We'll see. But is there a good chance? Of course, of course there is. Who wouldn't want to fight Amir Khan? He's supposed to be the top guy in the division."
