Beginning in 1959, he performed under the stage name Rob E.G. and recorded lap steel guitar instrumentals or covers of country-style vocals. He provided four top ten hits including two #1 hits in Sydney with "Si Senor" and "55 Days at Peking".
So good! One of THE great Aussie singles. Still remember Brian Henderson opening an episode of Bandstand with Rob doing this, his new record. Loved the movie but always thought how much better it would have been with Rob's version, at least on the opening and closing credits. Check out the C.D. ' The Festival File, Volume 3' for all his hit instrumentals.
I loved the sound of his guitar when I was young ( and still do) I didnt know that he recorded Daddy cool and was into horse breeding (or what ever) Its good to know that Aussie talent had some success esp from a talent that was never a pop star. The tone of his guitar is close to my hero - Jeff Beck
