Pilot Photonics -- High Capacity, Low Energy, Next Generation Fibre Optic Network

Fibre-optic telecommunication networks are the backbone of the Internet and Internet traffic growth has a compound annual growth rate of around 40%. As demand for bandwidth continues to grow, the usable optical fiber bandwidth available to the telecommunication network operators is becoming scarce. In order to meet the bandwidth demand, network operators must either lay new fibres (which are prohibitively expensive) or employ novel spectrally efficient modulation techniques to transmit more information in the available bandwidth.

Pilot Photonics, a spin-out from Dublin City University and the Tyndall National Institute have patented technology that will allow network operators to dramatically increase their throughput while simultaneously reducing both their capital and operational expenditure. The spin-out, led by Dr. Philip Perry and Dr. Frank Smyth, proposes to design and sell opto-electronic hardware to network equipment providers in the telecommunication industry and thereby enable a high capacity, low energy next generation fibre optic network.

Presenter: Dr. Frank Smyth, Dublin City University
Collaborators: Dr. Philip Perry, Dr. Frank Smyth, Prof. Liam Barry, Dr. Prince Anandarajah, Dr. Andrew Ellis.
