??? Melodic style is alive and well. While I pay my dues to Scruggs, I find the melodic style to be much more versatile. Neither Scruggs nor melodic style are better/worse than the other; both are necessary for a well-rounded player. And it's not "over the top and lacking in drive;" you leave out the fact that in a four minute video, every single break was an unimaginative imitation of Earl's break, while that one melodic player actually provided something different. Variety is the spice of life

James Dee Crowe, born 08-27-1937, had just turned 34 on 09-05-1971, the day this was filmed. He will be flattered to hear your characterization of him as "very young". BTW, Sonny Osborne was about 2 months shy of 34, Bill Emerson was 33, Don Stover was 43, Alan Munde was 24, Earl was 47.
