THE DREAMCATCHER LEGEND
Many many moons, sunsets and seasons ago, a very wise spiritual leader of an Indian nation went high into the mountains to have a vision. After several moons went by, a great spirit who was known as teacher of wisdom came to him in the form of a spider and spoke in a spiritual language that only the two on the mountain could understand.
The great spirit spoke of circles of life from very young to very old. As the spirit did this, he spun a web. When he was done, he explained how perfect the web was. He went on to say that there are good and evil spiritual forces that all people listen to. If you listen to the evil forces, evil things can happen but if you listen to good forces, good things will happen to you and your people. When the sprite was done with his talk with the Indian leader, he gave the web he had woven to him explaining that it is a perfect circle and the web, when duplicated and adorned with your people's precious crafts will protect them from evil spirits and prevent bad dreams from coming to the children. If you believe in the great spirit, the web can catch the good ideas and thoughts of you and your people and the bad and evil ones will go through the hole in the middle. When the great leader returned to his people, he informed them of his vision and the dream catcher idea was born.
The people of his nation crafted dream catchers and the Indian nation prospered for many, many seasons. Great care was taken with the crafting and the care of the dream catcher and it has become a sort of indian religious object.
Dreamcatchers are handmade round objects with webbing that are hung in the windows of Native Americans for protection. Originally they had been hung in children's rooms to prevent nightmares and the legend has it that the dreamcatcher would catch the bad dreams so the child would not have them. Today, Dreamcatchers as a sort of sign of Indian unity and have been adopted by most American Indian tribes. They have become popular among non-native americans.
So now you know the legend of the Dreamcatcher! Dreamcatchers (sometimes quoted as two words Dream Catchers) have evolved through Native American culture. As time has moved forward, they have been decorated in all sorts of ways and styles since the first great spiritual leader had his vision thousands of sunsets ago. You will want to explore the various types ad styles by going back to the Dream catcher menu page.
