October 6, 2008: Sometimes it just makes sense to have different places to feed your back yard wildlife. We tried many feeders and poles. Squirrels climbed onto the bird feeders and ate the seed. Deer also ate the birdseed. Finally, a solution: A feeding platform, a bird feeding station, and a squirrel lunchbox. Don't worry about the deer: they eat the clover and dandelions in the grass. The bluejays also enjoy the platform. And the seed that drops from all of the feeders is picked up by the ground-feeding birds.

The squirrels get black-oil sunflower seed, tiny pieces of apple, and nuts. The bird feeders have black-oil sunflower seed, wild bird seed, Nyjer thistle. There is a special treat cake in a metal basket, at the back. I'll hang a suet cake in December, when the weather turns cold. Right now, I don't have any hummingbird feeders, but I have plenty of nectar flowers that bloom in the summer and some that bloom in late fall and winter.

  • No matter what I do, the squirrels get everything and destroy everything. They eat through anything but metal, but they've even managed to undo metal hinges and screws! I have a number of different types of feeders for all types of birds and just continue to spend money feeding the squirrels along with the birds...sigh...

  • Great Idea! Thanks. Those crafty squirrels. Have just started putting out sunflower seeds, and partial heads. Any ideas on how to leave the heads or part of intact and feed? Your comments on the video is just what I have been observing. The resident cardinals have been beautiful to watch. I like to use the heads to observe the many different ways each bird uses to extract from the head and then the shell. Again THANK YOU! Grew the SFs from a few seed the neighbor gave me. 12 10" heads!

  • LOL!! Sometimes you have to get creative. Squirrels especially will find some way to outwit you most every time. It looks like your approach of separate tables is working. So far... :-)

    Moosie

  • so cute!!! the squirels that live around my house try and get into the bird feeder too!! they try for hours!! it is so cute!!!
