Singer/bandleader Vaughn Monroe used his strong, mellow voice for making hit records, and as the spokesman for RCA Victor in the late 1950's and into the 1960's. Here he's seen in two of these gems where he promotes Living Stereo records (playing his theme, "Racing with the Moon") and RCA radios.

  • The reference to Monroe being an RCA stockholder is from the Spike Jones Wikipedia listing, in which it's said that Monroe objected to Spike's lampooning of his singing...and because Spike was on RCA records, stockholder Monroe was able to put a stop to it. Well, Spike poked fun at all the big record stars, and Monroe might have been a good sport about it. As for Elvis, I'm just imagining "what if." Of course he wouldn't do commercials. After all, his fame dwarfed Monroe's. Now calm down.

  • Interesting story...but being an RCA stockholder and a 'major' stockholder are worlds apart! Monroe, most likely, got stock options as an employee of the label.

  • Monroe was a spokesman for RCA in large part because he was a major RCA shareholder. You have to wonder...what if RCA had dropped this stuffy "old fogey" approach and convinced their ultimate rockin' superstar, Elvis, to be their spokesman? "It's not your father's victrola..." But I am with freakybuzz. Those big old wood consoles possessed an awesome richness of sound not duplicated today.

  • Where did you come up with Vaughn being a 'major' RCA stock holder?!! I don't think so! Vaughn was still an influential spokesperson when he made these commercials. I doubt if you'd get Elvis to do commercials at any price.

  • wow, I want a new RCA Studiomatic Changer! Can I get one at Best Buy? Or do I have to wait till they come out.

  • DO check at Best Buy; I've seen some nice turntables there and recently!

  • After RCA destroyed Edwin Howard Armstrongs FM network, they make FM radios. How sick can you get?

You all should be listening to FM on 40 mc/s!!! That was the original FM broadcast band!

  • @sandhgreen They were making them while they were destroying him. Eventually, his widow got $1million, or there abouts, from all the companies involved. I never saw the point of moving the band; they should have dropped channel 5 and made it 40-108. I have to admit, though, that this space was precious in those days; UHF wasn't really usable until transistors became economical (though I believe there were some marginal all-tube converters); even then, it kind of sucked without a roof antenna.

  • Does the knob go up to eleven?

  • @weightfeather1

I'd have to agree. The Magnavox sound quality is far superior as well.

  • @damusician they don't even make console televisions anymore. You could buy in any style to fit your other furniture.

  • SET IT AND FORGET IT?! Oh no! Vaughn you spawned a ton of terrible infomercials!

I love RCA's old records and equipment, BTW.

  • I have always liked those old stereo ads, they don't advertise stereo like that anymore, thank you for posting this great historical ad...Lloyd.

  • I have one in the storeg but the speakers are plain square the chaiger is mint with the football shaped arm on it
