Famous Belgian mezzo Rita Gorr goes into soprano territory for this aria from Gaspare Spontini's opera La vestale. She portrays the unhappy Vestal virgin Julia, who is in love with the Roman general Licinius. When she is asked to guard the sacred fire of the goddess Vesta at night, Julia can't restrain herself and opens the door of the temple to let her lover in.
In this 1959 recording, part of an EMI box of aria-cd's by a great generation of singers of French opera, including Micheau, Blanc, Crespin and Gedda, Rita Gorr performs with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Lawrence Collingwood.

Gosh, this is TERRIFIC! Gorr is superb, I'm just sorry she didn't record the aria itself, "Toi que j'emplore avec effroi." Wonderful singer.
