The history of the poppy, as a symbol of remembrance & why we wear them.

We will remember them.

  • Excellent video. I am pulling together information for a speech I need to make on Memorial Day. Your insights are right on the mark. It is interesting that your research and mine are almost parallel. The speech begins with Flanders Fields and Keeping the Faith. I finish with Abraham Lincoln and Pericles. Thank you for sharing.

  • @TheBivory Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

  • Now I know to wear a white one next year... Thanks for the history lesson...

I can't stand the idea of war or violence.

  • As it happens i didn't see any white poppies this year at all. Best of luck with finding one for next year :)

  • Great video-very informative! I was surprised to hear and read in some of the comments that people in America didn't know what they were or ever saw them here. In my town they always hand them out for Memorial Day and Veteran's Day-I thought they did it everywhere. Maybe it's because we have a few American Legion and Sons of American Legions posts near by.

  • Thanks Paul. Because people didn't seem to know what it was all about was the main reason i did this video in the first place.

I did see, during my research, that some Americans did use Memorial Day as a kind of substitute for our Remembrance Day. We need these days more than ever i think :)

  • Yeah well the Marijuana leaf is a symbol of rememberance too.

---For all the people harrassed by the police--for all the people falsely imprisoned--

for all the families torn apart by the illegality of a precious herb and commodity.

To me the poppy is a symbol of rememberance too.

however it also reminds me that thousand have tied from opium overdoses

and all the terrible addictions to herion rampant throughout the world.

A symbol that is a symbol is a symbol.

  • My pleasure Curt.

I had to check the video to see which moment you were talking about, but i see what you mean :)

  • My "aha" moment came at 4:30 -ish. Now I finally get it.

I love that kind of symoblism.

Thanks for this little history lesson, Andy.

  • I've heard that there is a real monetary problem in California. So, it doesn't surprise me that taxes have been raised.

But, as you say, we are far luckier than a lot of people :)
