U.S. wine consumer poll says wine place names should be better protected!
Washington, DC -- As the United States is set to become the largest wine market in the world by 2010 there is growing concern among U.S. wine purchasers about misleading wine labels. In fact, about 50% (and in some instances more) of wines sold as "Champagne," "Port" and "Sherry" in our country are not produced in Champagne, France; Port, Portugal; and Jerez, Spain.
A national poll, commissioned by the Center for Wine Origins and Office of Champagne, USA, shows U.S. wine purchasers are increasingly demanding truth-in-labeling.

They just want to sell more of their product. This is just a shame. I doubt many people buy champagne and don't get what they expected.

American companies should rise to the occasion here: truth in labeling!!!

Other countries protect the names of wine regions, and the U.S. should follow suit. It's unfair, unethical and misleading to call any old sparkling wine Champagne! Same goes for Port and Sherry.

I totally agree, this is most critical. Drinking wine is not just about getting buzzzed but also enjoying to support the country of origins. Stupid government should know this already and make more laws!

I can't believe in the world of lawsuits, food and drink recalls, and strict FDA guidlines that companies can still get away with this. Thanks for the informative post and I'll definitely be checking labels more carefully now.

I agree, anyone marketing sparkling wine as "Champagne" should be out of business; same goes for Port and Sherry.
