@ Morse1883,
Hi again, just left you on the Cyril Tawney page.
The comments you make here are very valid. This is a most beautiful version of what was originally a primitive sounding song with just a nylon stung guitar as accompaniment.
This is aristocracy to Cyril's lower deck, if you understand my meaning. Both versions have their place in sea-shantie history.
I saw the Corries perform this a couple of times - stunning live but Cyril's was just him and his guitar.
Thanks for posting

Excellent, but I still prefer the traditional salty sea verson sung by Cyril Tawney ! It's almost as if this version is too perfect and although beautuful if doesn't have that raw fishman's...Cyril Tawney feel about it !

Wow ..didn't expect this . Go the Corries!

Cyril Tawney once said on the Mike Harding show IIRC that the intro was meant to sound like the big diesels in the submarine. This is the only version I have heard that gives that feeling

I love how they arranged and performed this. This version evokes a strong feeling of sorrow and disillusionment perfectly in tune with the lyrics. The Corries really were the masters of the folk song - brilliant.
