Helmut Oberlander has been the victim of a campaign of vengeance against elderly German and East Europeans since the end of the second world war. Mr. Oberlander has been accused of being a nazi war criminal, with very flimsy evidence. This is Helmut Oberlander's story.

@dmncau he didn't lie becuase there's no evidence he was even asked the question of his involvement in the first place. This is a witch hunt spurred on by the CJC. He was not a Nazi, just a conscript. He's been a model Canadian since coming here and should be allowed to stay.

I must post this comment to the video. Helmut Oberlander lied on his papers for coming to Canada. I have lived in Kitchener all my live and he was not the only former Nazi living in Kitchener. A man whom lived on my own street worked for the SS during world war 2 and lived in Kitchener until he died in his 90s. He actually built a house on my street. Scary?

The Soviet Union predated the Third Reich by about 15 years. Long before Hitler came to power Germans (and other ethnic groups) in Russia were being systematically persecuted by the Soviets and Tsarist regime before them. The brutality of the Russians/Soviets is no big secret, yet it always seems to be downplayed. It was further away, photographs and documents are less common or more difficult to access, I suppose. Oh, and there's the fact that in two world wars they were Canada's ally.

@KenGS333 I am not trying to whitewash anything at all. I admit that you are right. There was plenty of racism in Canada. People believed that the British race were superior to all others, and even included Catholics, Slavs, etc.

What we did against First Nations people was wrong, but you miss a very important point. Old stock Canadians believed that by educating and christianizing FN people they were helping.. The Nazis were not trying to help the Jews. Their goal was mass murder.

@makinawdandy6699 You can't tell me that the racism of many of your Canadian ancestors was not as bad. Canada had an apartheid system and many Native groups were subjected to what, according to the UN, constitutes "genocide".

@makinawdandy6699 Don't try and whitewash your own country's racist past. It wasn't "some" who thought this way; most white Canadians were diehard racists and did not want Jews in their country. Canada wouldn't even let them in when they knew that the Nazi regime intended to exterminate them. For starters you might want to read a book entitled "White Canada Forever" and then "None is Too Many". Claiming that "things change" is a cop-out.
