I thought I was finished shooting the original Protosound (PS1) locomotives that I refer to as the "oldies but goodies" but I totally forgot about this one, sitting undisturbed in a display case for at least the last ten years. MTH brought out this RailKing model of the UP's Gas Turbine, the so-called "Big Blow", way back in 1997. The exhaust from these was quite hot; one story that I remember is that one was parked under a highway overpass and the exhaust melted the asphalt roadway above! The model has the original Protosound system (dubbed Protosound 1 or PS1 after the Protosound 2 (PS2) system came out), which gives it sound and rudimentary remote control. Given that this is a RailKing semi-scale model, I'm not planning on upgrading it to PS2. In this True HD 1080p video, you can see it hauling a passenger train made up of semi-scale extruded aluminum passenger cars. Please visit my web site -- http://www.toytrains1.com -- for lots more videos and photos of both real and model trains.

  • The modern Lionel CW-80 transformer is notorious for causing problems with the PS1 electronics in the older MTH locomotives as it doesn't put out a pure sine wave AC voltage. I use classic ZW transformers from the 50's and have no problems.

  • As long as the original NiCad batteries were replaced by NiMH batteries, there is no such problem.

  • Hi. I have the EXACT same engine...my problem is, it does not move. It will light up and the sounds somewhat work...i bought it used a train show in Council Bluffs. It is running a PS1 system i believe. I am using FastTrack and a 18V (80 Watt) Linonel transformer... PLEASE HELP. :)

  • @atsf3415dbr sometimes with old lionel tmcc engines that happens too my K4 wass mint so the chuff switch had to be fixed

  • If it was sitting in a display case for 10 years, how could it run? If you let the Proto1 engines sit for too long, the battery will scramble the chip. It happened to all my PS1 engines.

  • Suhweeeet!

  • ahhh awesome!

  • I love gas turbines. Cool.
