We at Your Chess Coach are often asked, "What age should I start teaching my child to play chess?" This video clip shows that you can start as early as 2 years old. Start with naming the pieces and make sure the lessons are short and fun!

Many parents are searching for the next Bobby Fischer, the next child genius to sweep the chess field and become world chess champion. Although that would be wonderful, the important thing is that our children get a good sound fundamental education in chess. Why? Because chess gives kids an advantage in this world.

Not only will he/she develop excellent problem solving skills, but he/she will learn patience and achieve self confidence. Studies show that chess makes kids smarter!

  • I see the next Judit Polgar.

  • Wow, now there's the best compliment a player could offer. Thank you!

  • I watched this video multiple times. It is so cute to see the little girl saying the names of the pieces. KEEEEEN! :)

Please upload more videos so we can track her progress. How about a blog with weekly news? I can see it now... a documentary following her chess development from 2 to 18 years old.

It wasn't possible to do a documentary like this when Susan Polgar was growing up, but now, the technology is so accessible... More parents would be inspired to teach their kids how to play chess.

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and comment. We're working on an ecourse which can teach any parent to teach any child of any age to play chess. Right now we are piloting the course and it is going well. Part of the process also involves teaching the parents along the way, as many don't know the game.

I love your idea of a documentary!

  • Not really teaching her how to play, just to memorize the names of the pieces.

  • Actually learning the names of the pieces is the first step in teaching chess to a child (or anyone for that matter). We are creating ecourses designed to teach parents and educators to teach very young children to play. We are currently piloting this program with 25 parents and it is going very well. The whole trick to teaching chess is to make each step very easy and doable. This makes lessons enjoyable. Start with the names of the pieces and go from there!

  • this is excellent...but I was wondering why he doesn't place the pieces in their correct positions? That's probably the advanced class for 2 year olds!
