@bearsagainstevil: The second man's comments are difficult to hear but I think he said that he was referring to Kirkegard at that point.

By the mid 19th Century, Massachusetts was importing firewood from New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. There were some trees; Thoreau was living on Emerson's woodlot at the Pond. But most of the firewood was coming from northern New England. Remember, by 1845 Concord was already over 200 years old so the trees were being cut down since 1635!

@Waldenpunk no woods really? so what did every one heat their homes with i think i would prefer to walk around the pond in 1845 instead of today just saying.

Its not at the original site because there are post marking out the site. Plus, it was put near the parking lot so that people would actually see it...a lot of visitors don;t actually go into Walden Woods when they're here...
who says thoreau spent his life in misery ? what strikes me is the nice cosy size of his cabin ,a damn sight better than the mc mansions people are supposed to aspire too.
