Dalton Conley, Professor of Sociology and author of "Elsewhere U.S.A." says America needs a new, New Deal -- a Real Deal -- to address the insecure affluence and new inequalities of a post-modern age. Today, with basic material needs secured for almost everyone, a set of "positional goods" -- housing, education, health care -- create a new set of insecurities that traditional approaches to social insurance cannot address. Conley argues we must now create a new social contract that creates the conditions for maximum opportunity.
