This documentary of Satchel Paige won 1st prize for 9th, 10th, and 11th grade documentary media. I had to split it into 2 parts because it was over 10 minutes.
Enjoy!

  • !7, huh? I'm a little slow getting to the site, I'm afraid. Are you pursuing studies in film? Are you in college? If you are a baseball fan, there's an excellent documentary about Hank Greenberg that has received some favorable reviews during the last few years, since its premier in (where else?) Detroit.

  • @baboomr2 oh don't worry about getting to this site 2 years later. that's the nice thing about internet immortality! I am homeschooled and in 11th grade this year, to answer the question as to my age and schooling.

  • Very fine piece, Thomas, especially for a 15 year old. If you haven't already read SATCH, DIZZY, AND RAPID ROBERT by Timothy M. Gay, I recommend it. There are many myths about Satchel, butb this book seems to have researched thoroughly and acknowledged what was myth and what can be documented.

  • @baboomr2 Thank you very much! (although, of course, by now I'm almost 17 XD) I will definitely look into that book! Thanx!

  • Bill Veeck always said, "It's Veeck as in Wreck."

  • @jcbwh thanx. I realized that about 6 months later

  • Do you know if there is any extant video of Satchel Paige?

  • Good job, Tom! I came to the internet to learn about Satchel Paige and I only had to watch one video!!! (well, split into 2, whatever....) It's so sad that prejudice kept him out of the big leagues during his prime, but I'm glad he got into the Hall of Fame anyway!

  • Wow, nice work, impact36inc

  • @impact36inc ..how great would Satch have been in the bigs?

In the '30s, Satch pitched an exhibition against Dizzy Dean of the Gashouse Gang Cardinals.

Afterwards, Diz, no shrinking violet himself, said: "Wish we had you on the Cardinals, together we'd win 60 games!"

Satch replied "Heck, I'd win 60 all by myself."

And how much would a pitcher be paid today for going 12-10 for a team with a 64-90 record? That was Satch for the Browns in 1952 and at 46 (or perhaps 49) years old.

  • @impact36inc baseball-fever is a website you should visit -- they need you, too!

I think you'll find Satch did pitch to Babe Ruth. I believe he struck out the Babe, but also surrendered a late-inning homerun. Story is he met Babe at the plate and got his autograph.

Could have been a set-up, so much of barnstorming was about showmanship.

But no doubt Satch would have been great in the bigs (see next).

  • Are you making college plans? Looking toward a film school perhaps?
