In this tutorial I condense hours watercolor painting into eight minutes of video. You'll see a bit of wet into wet technique, learn to create smooth transitions of color, see the benefits of using masking tape and masking fluid, and learn to paint wood. This is the first half of my first tutorial video ever and I have mor eon the way. I'll probably try some with me talking and other just sped up super fast and maybe some that focus on particular tecniques rather than whole images. Enjoy!
The image in this How to video is from my newly illustrated children's book "The Little Boy Without a Name and Without a Birthday" which will be available on Amazon by April of 2011.

  • Thanks! Happy New Year to you as well.

  • HOW DO HIDE THE PENCIL DRAFT

  • @SCUBONZIES Thanks for asking. For these particular illustrations I painted fairly dark colors which covered the pencil. I went over a lot of the line work with watercolors doing outlines on the forms. In the end, if I really needed to have lines covered up completely I use guaoche paint which is basically just a fairly opaque watercolor paint. watercolors and guache can be mixed or guaoche can be painted right on top of watecolor. You'll need to experiment to know the limits of that.

  • @SCUBONZIES I should also say that I do the final drawing in pencil then clean it up and scan it into photoshop where I can make any further adjustments, then I take that final drawing and print it onto watercolor paper (only works for certain size paper and depends on your printers capabilities) So technically I could even lighten the drawing in photoshop befor eprinting if necesary. Hope that helps

  • Thanks "theshomrom" I have my process recorded for about five images from this book but I ran out of time to edit them all and make them into finished videos. The unedited version are many hours long! I do have the second half of this video edited though and hope to eventually have time to finish final tweaks for that and post it on youtube! I also hope to eventually do more technique oriented videos int he future.

  • what weight of paper did you use?

  • @Amp5549 I used 140 lb. cold press Strathmore paper for this illustration. I would actually suggest using a heavier weight paper though, 300lb. woudl eb good. I tend to use 140lb. for my children's book art simply because it's cheaper for the amoutn of illustrations I need to do for the whole book. I generally pay up to $300 for supplies for a whole children's book.
