As part of the City and County of Honolulu's transportation network of buses (TheBus.org), was "TheBoat" (www.trytheboat.com) a threesome of ocean going vessels having a capacity of 149 passengers each. TheBoat ran between Aloha Tower in downtown Honolulu and Kalaeloa Harbor (Barber's Point) three times in the morning and three times in the afternoon on weekdays. A one way trip took approximately one hour, which was faster than commuting on the freeway during rush hour traffic. And the price was right, only a single bus fare of $2.00 could get you from downtown to Kalaeloa Harbor and then to Oahu's second city: Kapolei. Or you could just use the free transfer and return. The actual cost to the taxpayer was $60 each way, so it was one of the first things to be cut in this time of fiscal austerity.
This was my first trip on TheBoat, and I took my protege Justin to give him the experience of sailing on the ocean before service stopped, which it did at the end of June. We got on at Aloha Tower and then got off at Kalaeloa Harbor and took TheBus into Kapolei to get a snack and took the Country Express bus back into town. I had fun talking to the passengers and making this video of our last trip (actually I took another a few days later). Now I'm sad that this service no longer exists. At least there is this video memory for you all to enjoy!

We should give TheBoat another go at it. It'd probably be cheaper to taxpayers than TheTrain because it wouldn't require as much expensive infrastructure.

I had come to work one day in Marina del Rey and they told me that the boat had been leased to Hornblower... Great footage of Catalina Adventure..
