In 1921 Dublin, the IRA battles the "Black & Tans," special British forces given to harsh measures. Irish-American medical student Kerry O'Shea hopes to stay aloof, but saving a wounded friend gets him outlawed, and inexorably drawn into the rebel organization...under his former professor Sean Lenihan, who has "shaken hands with the devil" and begun to think of fighting as an end in itself. Complications arise when Kerry falls for a beautiful English hostage, and the British offer a peace treaty that is not enough to satisfy Lenihan.
I knew a man who was involved in the "TROUBLES" for real,he just happened to be my father. As a statement on Irish history it is not-as cinema entertainment it's excellent.Cagney was in the twilight of his long "BRILLIANT" career ,as an Irish/American he loved makeing this film.

@adri204 a nutjob?.... perhaps, as the eventually killed Collins... but they should have pressed the Brits for more... say a withdrawal from Northern Ireland after 25 years... Ireland will be united one day in the near future at long last...

Its a good movie but very slanted in "Treaty" bias. The only Anti Treaty bloke was a nutjob lol
