Santuario
by Jack Licitra / Susan Kane-Perretti.
Well we did not know you then, but we feel like we do now
I believe are lives are lead by the dead to places we are found
Were they looking down on our world in an alleyway near the train
The place where you suffered and were set free from your pain
Santuario
Stars were clear in the night sky, children were singing in a church
We felt like we had done so much good but it did not stop your hurt
An expecting mother lay in bed, she was carrying my son
I can't imagine how your mother felt to lose her precious one
There was a place that I once knew, people left their crutches there
A simple chapel in the hill, built for those in despair
Santuario, Santuario
Santuario, Santuario
Santuario
On the high road to Taos, traveling in the dark
Waiting for the sun to rise and reveal it's beating heart
A father carried the cross, that he made on his back
for the return of his son safe from combat
I want to dream them all away
Shout out "stop" from my car
I want to hold you in my arms, keep you safe from this harm
I want his knife to disappear
I want them to remember they're just boys
I want them to see you as a human being
And let their hatred return to joy, simple joy
Santuario, Santuario
Santuario, Santuario
Santuario
"On Nov. 8, 2008, Marcelo Lucero, an Ecuadorian immigrant, was murdered in the town of Patchogue, N.Y. The killing, police say, was carried out by a gang of teenagers who called themselves the Caucasian Crew and targeted Latino residents as part of a sport they termed beaner-hopping. It highlighted a growing national problem. Latino immigrants in Suffolk County live in fear. Low-level harassment is common."
I knew of Jack's heartfelt involvement in this issue and, when he asked, I created this slideshow for his song "Santuario". Part of Jack's inspiration is the healing miracles of Santuario de Chimayo and I've used that image. This video clip is dedicated to the memory of Marcelo Lucero, to his family and to the belief that We are all human beings first.
