At NTT, research on terahertz wave technology started in 2006 as a contract project for NICT, using optical communication technology, which is one of NTT's core technology. Five years later, in February 2011, NTT have developed remote spectroscopic sensing system using terahertz waves.
The system emits terahertz waves towards the site of an emergency, such as a fire scene filled with smoke and flames, where they are again reflected back toward the receiver. The system converts these waves into a spectrum, which is analyzed. This enables toxic substances, such as dangerous gases, to be detected instantly from a distance.
By integrating NTT's terahertz generation technology, AIST's high-sensitivity terahertz detection technology, and Spectrum Technologies' terahertz spectrum database and analysis technology, a remote spectroscopic sensing system has finally been achieved.
