Earthkeeper on the street reporter, Annabelle Gurwitch combed upper and lower Main Street in Park City, UT during the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and ran into award winning documentary filmmaker, Joe Berlinger who unveiled his latest film Crude at the Festival earlier this month.
Crude asks the question, Who is responsible for the unconscionable dumping of 18 billion gallons of toxic oil waste in the Ecuadoran Amazon, poisoning the most bio-diverse place on the planet? Its a chronicle of the destruction this act caused to the lives of 30,000 indigenous people in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Perhaps best known for his film Brothers Keeper, Berlinger, by his own admission, is not an eco-documentarian. Previously he directed rock and roll doc, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster. Annabelle offered Joe a great idea for his next film. We call it, Heavy Metal Meets Earthkeepers. Imagine, if you will, a film that follows the heavy metal rock band around the country in their bus powered by used vegetable oil. If Hot Buttered Rum can do it, why cant Metallica?
