  • Not to mention he lost is only son to scarlet fever a few years before!

  • According to Bertha Spafford Vester, a daughter born after the tragedy, "It Is Well With My Soul" was written on this journey. Horatio was informated of the spot where the Ville du Havre was struck and sank. It was at that spot when Horatio began to contemplate his thoughts "It is well with my soul."

  • On November 22, 1873, while crossing the Atlantic on the steamship Ville du Havre, their ship was struck by an iron sailing vessel. Two hundred and twenty-six people lost their lives including all four of Spafford's daughters. Anna Spafford survived the tragedy.

Upon arriving in England, she sent a telegram to Spafford beginning "Saved alone." Spafford then sailed to England, going over the location of his daughters' deaths.

  • On October 8, 1871, the Great Chicago Fire swept through the city. Horatio Spafford was a prominent lawyer in Chicago. He had invested heavily in the city's real estate, and the fire destroyed almost everything he owned.

Two years later, in 1873, Spafford decided his family should take a holiday in England knowing that his friend D. L. Moody would be preaching there in the fall. Delayed because of business, he sent ahead of him his family: his wife and their four daughters.

  • Bob you and the team continue to inspire my playing here in new Zealand, my favourite hymn.

Thank you for taking the trouble to serve us with 'worship matters' blog.

  • @LadyDarya My grandpa died a month ago, hold fast to Christ. There is no hope for salvation in anyone else. Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

  • My dad died 12.10.11 of a massive heart attack; as we prepared the service this was the song we chose for last. By the time this song was over almost everyone at the funeral was singing it. While I still hurt, it is well with my soul.

  • This powerful hymn from 2 Kings 4:24 - without a doubt one of the most powerful in Christendom... performed well to - God be the Glory. Thanks for sharing.
