The Sandgarden is a permaculture home that heats and cools itself, processes its own waste, and grows it's own food. This film is from our "Food Forest" series with Jordan Hosea. Here he describes spiral gardens.

  • do you know of any books written about spiral gardens or keyhole gardens

  • Not specifically. "Gia's Garden" probably has good descriptions. Any permaculture book will probably describe spirals and keyhole's.

  • I have seen this type of garden before and yours is doing very well. But I wonder have you heard of the key hole garden? And if so which one do you think would be better?

  • Thanks for a great question. They allow few words. 1. Check for permaculture references to key hole gardens. They make for great use of larger garden space, are gardener friendly, etc. 2. There is no "better" for me. The spiral provides different microclimates and seating. Key hole gardens can support great diversity of plants, but spirals can do more. Also, elevation results in increased planting space. But don't give up on key holes, they have a place too! What are Earth's and your needs

  • @sandgardendick also there is a vid on YT that shows a spiral that is made mostly of straw... then uses compost/soil only in the planting areas... do you have any words on that?

  • @sandgardendick I've seen illustrations of sloped keyholes which seem to offer the best of both worlds... but I have as yet to see one in practice... Maybe the sloping of the sides is impractical in a keyhole... but if you topped it with straw wouldn't that help erosion?

  • Another inspiring video! thankyou!

  • You should grow a beard it would look good on you.
