A performance to "Roman" by Omar Faruk Tekbilek. This folkloric-inspired piece mixes American-style karsilama with elements of its Turkish romani roots and Dalia Carella's Dunyavi dance style. Courtesy of and copyright MDH Productions.

  • @Dalia Thank you so much! I love Dunyavi style, and it was my gateway drug into Turkish Oryantal & Turkish Romani dance.

  • Wonderful use of gesture in the dance. I am a beginner at ATS and am interested in a variety of styles and customs.

    This was fun and sassy!

  • Thanks! This one owes a lot to Dalia Carella's Dunyavi style. I highly recommend her videos (especially volume 1) if you want to learn more.

  • Folkloric karsilama is a form of Turkish Romani dance using a 9/8 rhythm. American karsilama came about when bands in the US played 9/8s. Turkish dancers performed traditional karsilama, while non-Turkish dancers copied them and adapted it to their own style (ex: skirtwork). Everyone modified what they were doing to suit the audience's preferences, and the most popular conventions and elements evolved into a coherent style, which we call american karsilama to differentiate it from Romani dance.

  • @rumbato

Snakes can not hear. But maybe they can hear that mizmar!

  • Nadira: you did a beauitful job with the Dunyavi style. Bravo! xxdalia

  • Hi, do you think that the regular 100% cotton 25 yard skirt would be as effective as your costume, or the heavier skirts? thanks a lot for your time.

  • Awesome facial expressions. Realy captures the fun liveliness of romany dance.

  • Beautiful dance!

  • this rhythm is better for group dancing than individual... and whats with the mizmar, gosh, non stop taqseem, so loud and penetrating, u will need ten glasses of arak to numb ur ears before adapting listening to this performance, thats why i prefer watching belly dances that uses egyptian music pieces. This mizmar or reed and the way the musician plays it is good for chasing out snakes from caves and holes, definately not for a night out for watching belly dancers.

  • Thanks Nadiradancer .Romani music . What a striking resemblance to Indian music !! One of the Indian Raag just resembles this tune.

Almost conclusive evidence about the Roma's Indian roots.
