@zcdarktide You can't define every scenario by one definition. Microsoft Game Studios had an active role in the development of AC2, and to a lesser extent, AC. All support was originally done by Microsoft. They were setting deadlines, hiring from within, etc.
@ACGuy31 yeah i'm well aware of the definition of a publisher, what people are not aware of is how little they have to do with the actual development of a game. yes, they get a final yay/nay on this and that, but essentially they are the people that fund the people that create the game, and in this case the people that hosted the servers. that's about it. a good example: EA owns over 20-30 (more?) different studios around the world... their contribution is a giant check and their logo.
@zcdarktide At the time of both releases, Microsoft owned the rights to both games. While they weren't the developers, they were in charge of release dates and the direction of the games.
@zcdarktide Asheron's Call 2 was released with Microsoft as a publisher. Microsoft owned the rights to Asheron's Call, until Turbine bought them in 2003, a year after Asheron's Call 2 was released.
@aged2 completely disagree. it was very laggy the first few days, but i never had any problems with chat and i never found the classes to be "unbalanced". it wasn't a pvp game, class balance didn't matter very much. the game started to deteriorate after they started trying to turn it into a group oriented game when it started out as a solo oriented game. after they nerfed defenders it was just nerf after nerf after nerf until the game was destroyed.
What are you smoking? It was horrible on lauch because it was so rushed. Chat didn't work, classes were VASTLY unbalanced, huge bugs. It wasn't until microsoft were out of the picture that it actually got really good.

this game was so fucking incredible when it FIRST came out, and then they completely ruined it by trying to turn it into EQ. so depressing.
