jackson browne didn't write this song, nobody knows where it was written. it's a traditional song, recorded at least as far back as the 20s. there's a Reverend Gary Davis version on you tube, and many more.

And Scott is a real street in Edwardsville, I drive down it all the time, the holiday inn is gone, it's a Comfort Inn now, room 124 is where he wrote it. The lady that sells cocaine is still there though. She's never left.

it takes a clear mind to take it. takes a clear mind to take it or not to take it ? it takes a clear mind to MAKE IT
Cocaine or not, he is one hell of a musician. I am 18 years old and instead of this new trash on the radio, I listen to only Jackson Browne type of music. He help me go through all my hardships, breakups, and teenage girl problems. He's kinda my Taylor Swift.
P.S: All hail David, the KING of all strings.

This song was written at the Holiday Inn in Edwardsville, IL. I live in Edwardsville, the hotel is gone, but I know where it was and I live just a mile away. It's pretty cool knowing Jackson Browne was partying in the hotel room partying here in Edwardsville. That had to be one crazy night, a lot of fun though I bet.
