READ ME!!!
This video is old and outdated just update to iOS 5.0 GM or to 5.0.1, they both can be jailbroken tethered with redsnow. Check out my new channel that i will be using alot http://www.youtube.com/user/CydiaAddict .
In this video i show you how to upgrade to iOS 5 beta5 B5, how to jailbreak it, and how to do the OTA or over the air updates with out being a developer because usually if you try to do the updates it will not work if you used redsn0w to hacktivate it (activate by making it think you are on the released version and not a beta version that you need to be a developer to use). i re-coded the system version to allow you to do it:) just please watch the video and if you have any problems message me please! or email me: masonschmitt@hotmail.com

links!: redsn0w beta5: https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev...

ios 5 beta ipsw firmware and iTunes downloads(NOTE! download the 5th beta ipsw and not the 6th or it will not work!!(but you can do the ota update after it works adn if it says you can): http://imzdl.com/

the system.plist that i made: http://www.multiupload.com/HEDJ7WV0XJ

iFunbox(if on mac you will need a different filesystem viewing program) http://www.i-funbox.com/
btw sorry about the background noise text instructions (to keep track where you are highlight the text: download all the downloads and setup the iTunes, plug in your iPhone or iPod (iPad not tested and probably wont work) hold shift and click restore, once done setup you iPod or iPhone until it says you are not a developer, then open redsn0w and select the ipsw, keep install Cydia checked and folow the instuctions, once it reboots go through the setup process until it says you are not a developer. once it says that open ifunbox and navigate to raw system *file...system...library...core services...* and copy the 'SystemVersion.plist' to your desktop or somewhere not in the same folder or it will over-right the one you downloaded. then replace the SystemVersion.plist with the one you downloaded. turn it off then back on. then replace the sytem.plist once again with the one you extracted then turn it off then back on. once it boots up you will be able to use your device!!! but! you will have to open redsn0w and click just boot tethered for now to use Cydia and you might have to delete Cydia to do the over the air (OTA) updates, to do this once you boot tethered in redsn0w you will have to open Cydia and got to the manage tab, once in the manage tap navigate to the packages and to the 'cydia installer' once you tapped the Cydia installer you need to tap uninstall at on the top left hand corner and press confirm and force remove. then once you exit out of Cydia the app will be gone and you should be able to do the OTA updates but if you want to sync your iPod or iPhone you will will have to replace the the SystemVersion.plist with the one that you downloaded so iTunes recognizes it as a full version instead of a beta which you have to be a developer to use iTunes with the beta(DO NOT!, replace the SystemVersion.plist while it is doing the OTA update because then it will pause the download because it thinks its doing the wrong thing then you will not be able to continue or cancel the download no matter what until you redo the entire thing from the restore over again.) put the lockscreen timer on never if you plan on using cydia because if you don't then if it locks while installing something then it Could make your iPod go into a boot loop and you will have to open redsn0w again and boot tethered again for it to work.
