Catch-22 is a satirical, historical novel by the American author Joseph Heller, first published in 1961. The novel, set during the later stages of World War II from 1943 onwards, is frequently cited as one of the great literary works of the twentieth century. It has a distinctive non-chronological style where events are described from different characters' points of view and out of sequence so that the time line develops along with the plot.

The novel follows Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier, and a number of other characters. Most events occur while the airmen of the fictional Fighting 256th (or "two to the fighting eighth power") Squadron are based on the island of Pianosa, in the Mediterranean Sea west of Italy.

Catch-22 is a 1970 war film adapted from the book of the same name by Joseph Heller. Considered a black comedy revolving around the "lunatic characters" of Heller's satirical novel.

Although a talented production team which included director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Buck Henry (who also acted in the film) worked on the film for two years, the complex task of recreating a World War II bomber base and translating an anti-war satire proved daunting. Besides Henry, the cast included Alan Arkin, Martin Balsam, Richard Benjamin, Norman Fell, Art Garfunkel, Jack Gilford, Bob Newhart, Anthony Perkins, Paula Prentiss, Martin Sheen, Jon Voight and Orson Welles.

  • "Danby! D-a-n-b-y!"

God, I love this film; it's ridiculously funny.

  • is that martin sheen on the right on yo yo?

  • A great movie by a master-Mike Nichols! Orson Welles as Gen. Dreedle....to me the funniest names are Lt. Scheisskopf and Major Major Major Major. The late Joe Heller said in an interview that his characters were not drawn from real USAAF enlisted and officers as high ranking officers who talked and acted out crazily would have been relieved and sent home packing. There was too much at stake to defeat the Nazi war machine.

  • @AppleHankypants

and there was me thinking there was only idouts on youtube thank you for proving me wrong

  • @Dimitrar I disagree I put the book on the TV for two hours without getting any entertainment. lol Comparing a book to a movie adaptation is apples to oranges. Having said that I prefer seeing movie versions first, then I can say if you like the movie you will love the book as opposed to saying the book was better. I personally love the movie, the book well I thought it was good.

  • i excpected a ska song...

  • @starclassic89 He rolls them into his head! He's really good at that, clearly.
