AUDIO HERE, START LISTENING AT 0:30 seconds: http://sites.google.com/site/solvingtimeonyoutube/files/Newvoicefilecleanedup...

There was an issue with my microphone placement before, so the slightly better audio is up above.

Have you ever recorded something on your digital camera or other device, then played it back and said, "Man, that sounds like ----."?

Do wish you could get crystal clear, professional quality audio, without shelling out money for an expensive microphone?

Good morning. Today, I'll show you how to clean up audio by removing unwanted noise 4 FREE in the Audacity audio editor.

[Insert Stuff]

Now, using these control buttons up here, identify which part of the waveform represents noise.

Using your mouse, select a section of just completely pure noise, by clicking-and-dragging from the beginning of the pure noise to the end.

Now click the Effect drop-down menu and select "Noise Removal..." from the choices below.

In Step 1, click Get Noise Profile. You have now told the computer which parts of the audio are noise and which parts are not. You will need to set a new noise profile every time you open Audacity.

Now select all the parts of the audio that you want the noise to be removed from, which is, in my case, all of it.

Then, go back to the Noise Removal window in the Effect drop down menu.

Use the slider to select how much noise you want filtered out. Use the preview button to preview what the audio will sound like.

Once you are satisfied with how the preview sounds, click Remove Noise and Audacity will begin removing the noise from your audio.

Sometimes Audacity may actually create some extra noise of its own, even if it gets rid of the old noise.

If this happens, try selecting a smaller portion of your audio as your Noise Profile.

Now, playback the audio and make adjustments as needed.

  • hey i downloaded the program but for some reason the when i record there is no sound any idea what to do i tried reprograming it several times already

  • @LuCkeeJay17 Oh, Google "set up audio input" in Windows XP and Audacity. The problem is that your computer doesn't know if it's supposed to be recording from it's own speakers, from a line-in jack, from a microphone jack, USB microphone, etc.

  • I followed this system for a video I took from my digital cam of someone speaking. The first time through, it lowered the noise but still left this pitchy whistling sound. So I did the filter a second time and it eliminated that sound. However, it also seemed to lower the quality of the speaker's voice. So is there a way to bring back the quality of the voice. Someone must have experienced this problem. How do you resolve it? How do you keep the quality in the video of the speaker's voice?

  • @HouseGuide The more specific the section of noise you select, the less the effect on the quality of the voice. What you are telling Audacity is the frequency of noise, so if you select some noise that also has a frequency related to the person speaking, Audacity will chop off some of the speaker's quality too.

  • ok, so what if you get an annoyingly loud buzzing noise coming from a webcam through the whole entire video? is there any way to fix that?

  • @JuneYankee Perhaps you could play around with the frequencies, but for a truly satisfactory track I would recommend you re-record!

  • or you could go to effect>amplify and turn the sound off for the selected part....

  • @RedTailedTuna can you send me the audio file of that lecture, maybe I can solve this

  • kiiddiinngg

  • I'm trying to do this with a old recorded lecture with a lot of static, it's not working very well. Even if I take a little noise off the static sounds wobbly and his voice sounds metallic and unnatural.

  • I have a movie I want to pull some engine sounds from, but unfortunately there is music at the same time, I have seen videos on YT of music that had the dialogue from tv shows edited from it (unreleased music, taken directly from the show) I want to do it the other way around, editing out the music to just hear the noise (in this case a monster truck engine)

How would I go about doing this?

  • hey why you download the mac osx version but your using windows

  • also, SHUT UP ABOUT THE DAMN MUSIC! we want to learn how to use audacity, and he's showing us.

  • i got out of the window when i realized what to do, i decided to try recording. i did just a second of blank noise for me to filter, i did a mistake so i deleted it. right after i deleted it, that clapping at the end of the video, played...i was pretty amazed by my deleting abilities too.
