You're splitting hairs here man, and I can guarantee that semantics would mean very little to the charred corpses inside the cars.  I fully understand that there are some very slim parameters of air/fuel ratio for an actual textbook "explosion" to occur, but you're making it sound like nothing would have happened if the vehicles burned. I watch too much TV? No, I'm just going off of wrecks I've responded to as a member of my local VFD. You even admitted yourself that an explosion is possible.

Why wouldn't it? In a crash that severe the fuel cell would more than likely be ruptured, and there was already fire present. Gasoline+open flame=equals explosion/rapidly expanding fire. Lesson over.
