  • what's the bubbling gas? it seems colourless, so it can not be chlorine or chlorine oxide

  • @SuperAngelofglory It's oxygen from some H2O2 that was in solution.

  • exotermic reaccion?

  • @victorstormf1 Very exotermic

  • Try stuffing any organic substance on it for epic lulz.

  • @mewrox99 ok, just be careful making perchloric acid because if it is higher than 72% conc. it will become shock sensitive and extremely reactive. so just to be careful, i would stick to 65% or less strength acid for production.

  • @HazMatLabz

it was 60ml of 98% and i used a teaspoon worth of lab grade kclo4. i suspect it may be that the h2so4 oxidized the copper and gave of so2, the gas was not cl2

  • @mewrox99 ok, i think i know what happened. either the sulfuric acid was too strong (like 65+) and it made the anhydride Cl2O7, or it could be that if it was homemade perchlorate, there could have been leftover chlorate which creates chlorine gas due to the decomp. of chloric acid.

  • I tried adding KClO4 to conc. H2SO4 and adding a copper coin. Bad idea. A irritating gas (H2SO4 vapor or maybe a chlorine oxide) was coming off the beaker. Neutralizing the solution with baking soda followed by a large h2o wash stopped the fumes.

  • @mewrox99 Barium perclorate + H2SO4.
