Much of New Zealand came to a standstill this afternoon to remember the victims of last week's Christchurch earthquake. The two minutes silence was observed at 12.51pm, exactly a week since the 6.3 magnitude quake struck the city, killing many people.

In Christchurch, Prime Minister John Key and his wife Bronagh joined Christchurch mayor Bob Parker at the Arts Centre to mark the two minutes' silence.

The service at parliament was attended by the Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand and Lady Satyanand, Deputy Prime Minister Bill English, church and faith representatives, parliamentarians and members of the Diplomatic Corps.

  • words can't express what happened last week, in this time of tragedy, we've prayed and silenced the voices of new zealand at 12:51pm, the time of the earthquake, although we were silenced, our voices were heard. Mark this date in history, 22nd of February 2011. the date NZ changed forever!!!

  • Bless the family's that lost loved ones.

  • And than prince william bent over and took it up the arse by me, the tranny king of britain.

  • R.I.P.

    Much strength for the survivers.

  • Very sad, but it means approximately nothing that it was a church!! You religious clowns NEED to get over yourselves. You're no more important or valuable than anyone else that has died.

  • Our city may be broken but we will recover, we will rise from the rubble, we will again cherish our poor broken cathedral, we will again become a wondefull city to live in, we will restore our pride, we are proud as a community, we are greatful to the suportt the world has given us. We are many, we are one.

  • @BluntAnim they are all in our preys.May the good Lord watch over them all.

  • I saw this on TV and there was background noise which made the whole thing more unreal. Can we get that on this clip? I get no sound at all. By the way, thanks for posting this....

  • It brings a tear to my eyes watching this.. I live in Brisbane, but Chch will always be my home & I will always be a Cantab.. It really warms my heart to see so many in support of my beloved Chch
