@jckea Yes, she deserves to be mentioned as an example of a pianist not in Art Tatum's or Oscar Peterson's league.

@lipsbach I don't think so, it's one of his favorites though so you can find it on a lot of his records.

I've a hudge respect for Art Tatum. And I understand why some people compare him with Oscar Peterson. But I love Oscar's music, not Tatum's. The 2 musics are very different.

Garner and Tatum display their genius in other ways. Neither of them seemed to have any difficulty with keys. Tatum is playing the piece we're hearing in Db. Thats not the easiest of keys for piano. Garner played Misty in Ab originally but I've heard him playing stuff in the key of B. The big difference between Oscar and Art is that Art did it first, both technically and harmonically. Oscar of course took it to a new level but his roots were always in Tatum's style.

Tatum's right hand had the pyrotechnics, but the left hand was a miracle of invention - plus everything else the right hand had ;-)

the most influential piano/musician. Jazz, classical and everything in between. Everyone secretly takes from him one way or another. Its like Tatum was alien craft that crashed to earth.All we have to do is take it apart, analyze it and then replicate or create variations. He did all the work. Lets put it this way, Einstein is the Tatum of physics !

yes youtube is good. Oscar and Art were the same. i tried to listen for a difference and there is none, unless you go fast enough for it to become a dog whistle in order for me to not be able to hear it.
