  • Dr. Burke, we are pregnant with mo-di twins and found out at our Level II 20 wk U/S that Baby A has CoA. Do you find that most of these are isolated lesions not associated with genetic syndromes? (All of the anatomy of both fetuses was WNL). Will the baby have to be rushed to surgery or will there be time before the surgery? Are all babies born with this immediately symptomatic and require immediate intervention? Do you ever have to do median sternotomy approach for this surgery?

  • @2006akw Babies with coarctation can be stabilized immediately after birth with a routine drug (prostaglandin E1) available at virtually every hospital. This gives you time to find a competent surgical team, and develop a plan for treatment. We use a median sternotomy for babies who have an aorta that is too small over a long section of the aortic arch, particularly the transverse arch where the aorta turns around. I hope this helps. We're here if you need us. Sincerely, Redmond Burke MD

  • wow. my son had this procedure done at 14 days old. he's 9 now and doing very well. I came across this video and after several days, finally brought myself to watch it. You're an angel and you're blessed by God to be able to save lives. you have my upmost admiration and respect. My son, Caleb, was undiagnosed. I was home alone with him when he turned blue on me. I was only 20 years old. I took him into his pediatrician's office where she glanced and ran with him. Scariest day of my life.

  • @aprylllynne I got chills reading your comment. You were heroic to save Caleb. Your pediatrician was great to recognize how sick he was. I'm very happy for you. Make sure you keep track of his blood pressures to make sure the coarctation area grows normally. Sincerely, Redmond Burke MD

  • Hi doctor burke im 27 years old and they just find i have this problem , my body also grew up a whole set of small veins to keep me going my aorta is narrowed as 7mm and i will like to know if i shoud go with surgery or a sten implant thanks for your help

  • @mik32318 I would consider an interventional cath procedure like a balloon and stent. This would be less traumatic for you. Make sure the team has access to covered stents in case you have an aortic tear and bleeding. Not all the interventional cath teams have access to this technology. Let me know if I can help you. Sincerely,

    Redmond Burke MD

  • getting this done on march 8th, im 15. FUUUUUCK haha

  • i had this surgery when i was 6 and they went thru my back and i have mitral valve prolapse but all they are doing right now is vasotec 2 times a day

  • my nephew is going for this surgery tomorrow, he is 3 months old....we are all terrified...thank you for this video it makes us feel like there is hope...I just hope everything goes as smoothly as it did her.

  • forward to my 3rd open heart...

  • I had this done back in 1987 when I was 9 days old. I was airlifted to Arkansas children's hospital, and it was performed as an emergency surgery. Then had it performed again at the age of 9 months in 1988. The 2nd surgery was to make the 1st "nicer" not really sure what they changed. I'm curious though, on mine I know the used part of a vein from my left arm to repair it. I didn't notice you doing that, is that old school practice? I also have a bicuspid aortic valve that leaks, not looking

  • i had this surgery done 22 years ago. Will I ever require an additional surgery? i've been healthy ever since. are there any additional risks I face?

  • Thank you for posting this. I had this surgery done when I was 4.5 years old, doctors didn't know I needed it until then and found it by accident. They were unable to resect the coarctation because I have an abnormally placed left subclavian artery, so a patch was used. I also have a bicuspid aortic valve that remains. Why wouldn't they also fix the valve?

  • Dr. Burke,

So our ped. cardio. identified aortic arch hypoplasia with coarctation as well as a large perimembranous vsd on our twin A. She felt pretty confident that the repair would not be amenable to to the resection/anastamosis procedure but rather require "fileting" the arch and grafting in a pericardial patch. Can both defects be repaired in the same surgery? What is the timeframe for such a repair to take place given prostaglandin infusion to keep the ductus patent? What's the recov time?

  • Dr Burke: My wife is 41 & just diagnosed with CoA. She had PDA/VSD as an infant and has lived a very active life since. Current symptoms limited to high bp (130-150), cold feet, and occasional soreness in her legs that she has long since gotten used to. All in all, life not bad. QUESTIONS: Why mess with a good thing? What are the risks if CoA untreated? How do these cp to potential complications of the stent procedure? Any potential complications from PDA/VSD surgery affecting stent procedure?
