@47midnight Thanks for the sentiment. When we watch Episodes IV - VI we're largely viewing McQuarrie's imagining of the Star Wars universe, not Lucas'.

RIP Ralph McQuarrie

@SamuelJCir Next to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

This documentary is awesome! Unfortunately it seems like well-made, detailed documentaries included on DVD or Blurays are a thing of the past.

@jerico641 See, I thought Aliens was just about as good as the first one, but for many different reasons. But they are completely different films. As far as Cameron's storytelling ability, I think Aliens showed that he can tell a decent story. While not groundbreaking, the story was interesting enough. Characters were living, breathing entities. Terminator 2 is another good example, and definitely on my top five Sci Fi films. Granted, he strikes out with story a lot, but not always.

Well, I agree that Alien was far superior to Aliens; the two films really don't even compare. Cameron's only strong suit is FX; his storytelling is bland and repetitive, to say the least. Not offensive, just predictable. I enjoyed Titanic, for instance, but only for it's technical prowess. As for Lucas, he WAS a great storyteller, as is evidenced in films like American Grafitti. But he has become quite self-concious and more than a bit self-indulgent.

@chroniclerofthe70s correction," THX .... "

@jerico641 Fair enouph. I consider Lucas a great story teller. I think TXH showed Lucas's originality and honest treatment of science fiction. I consider Star Wars a technical fantasy film. I thought Cameron's " Aliens " was far less impressive than Ridley's " Alien." Why? Ripley runs out of ammunition destroying the alien queen's egg chamber knowing very well the entire facility will be abliterated by a thermonuclear detonation.

I first saw this documentary when I was 9 years old. By the end of the documentary I knew that I wanted to become a film maker! While I'm no fan of George Lucas, the original trilogy and his first film THX 1138 changed the way I look at the world! <3

Also, I'm a graduate of the New York Film School, where I recieved a Masters in Film Theory and Motion Picture History. Believe me, I have been through the SW films shot by shot, and consider Lucas a genius, not only for his own contributions to the tech aspects of movie making, but also because he knew how to suround himself with the brightest minds in the industry at that time. However, he pales in comparison to at least a dozen American directors.
star wars is the single greatest creation mankind has ever and will ever conceive. Period.

If The "Star Wars" films was the "Messiah" of the film world then every "Messah" needs one to come before him to make the road straight. think "Jaws The Baptist"
