@miladynana agreed

@palexa43 while their relationship in the movie is a little ambiguous, in the book Ruth and Idgie were in love. the director of the movie even stated that the food fight scene between them is a metaphorical love scene....

@miladynana yes!! perfect fit.. movie was......Powerful, Moving, so sad, some funny as hell, Unforgetable, Classic, Bravo!!!

I guess it all depends on what kind of boundaries you set for friendship. A few hundred years ago, the kind of closeness Idgie and Ruth share was acceptable even in a society that condemned homosexuality.

I am a 63 year old hetero male; and this is and has been my very favorite movie! The relationship between Ruth and Idgie is tender, it's fiercely loyal, it's enduring and it's loving. Because they are both women, it is gay; mostly it's intensely human. This whole film is about strong women and their relationships. The bond between Sipsie and Ruth, Evelyn and Ninny, Idgie and the homeless folks in the Hoover city, or her compassion for Smokey Lonesome, her hero-worship of Buddy. it's the best!

Beautifully done.

I was a kid when this movie came out, was just barely beginning to have my own stirrings of being gay. I didn't see the romance between them at that point. Now I watch it and Idgy's so gay she could belch rainbows. Great movie!

first off i would like to say why can't there be a full length movie of fried green tomatoes with out any parts to where it is spliced like it is. i mean come on people we live in a world of technology i mean if i can watch convoy the trucking movie in a single 1 1/2 hr straight through why not this movie or any other ones that are spliced up like a slice of pizza. second their kind of friendship has nothing to do with being in a relationship like women are today. it was a platonic one!!

Now- as far as I remember from reading the book, and watching the movie- in all technicality they were 'just' really good friends. But one would only stick to that response if they only took the written word- and even then it stretched the boundaries some times, with the amount they say 'I love you'. However, if you watch it, you'd realize that every single piece of subtext is telling us that they had a relationship. And I do not want to live in a world where that is not an understood fact.

i'm going to have to respectfully disagree... if you look at the dvd special features and extras ("making of" is especially insightful), or if you go snag the book from the library or the local bookstore, i think you might change your opinion...

No Ive never seen the book or anything but Id really like to be able to pick it up and read it. I think the movies great how it is without adding that their more than friends.
