NBC and CBS' quarter-hour newscasts did NOT appear opposite each other at the time, 'timmy'. "DOUGLAS EDWARDS WITH THE NEWS" appeared at 7:30pm(et), while John Cameron Swayze's "CAMEL/PLYMOUTH NEWS CARAVAN" aired at 7:45. The remainder of those half-hours featured musical variety shows (including Perry Como on CBS, and Dinah Shore and Eddie Fisher on NBC).
The scenes with the military people look staged. Since this was live TV in 1955, I don't see how they could go so quickly from one location to another.
Note: the Brylcreem ad is NOT from the same period as this broadcast (it actually dates from around 1960). The "PLYMOUTH NEWS CARAVAN" alternated with 'CAMEL NEWS CARAVAN" on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:45pm(et), right after the 15 minute "DINAH SHORE SHOW". John Cameron Swayze was the anchor; over a year later, David Brinkley would became co-anchor [with Chet Huntley] of what became "THE HUNTLEY-BRINKLEY REPORT".
