  • Nice animation...

question though... does that "overlay" process work for all 3d integration into real footage? Like are the dirt and dust pre-passes then you comp them all together in AE or something? Why use pre-passes and not just the tree and dirt in 1 pass, then add it to the real footage? Is it done in multiple passes only so each element can be tweaked seperately (like color correction) or is there another reason for it?

  • @shadesters Yes. It is common in production to save out many passes (usually at once), and each element may be further separated into channel passes for specular, diffuse, reflect, spec shad, dif shad, lum, transparency, shadows, and many others. This allows much more control to tweak in the comp where it is far less render intensive. But I am unusual in that I prefer to get elements as correct as possible in CG and render as few passes as necessary to cut down on considerable complication.

  • @Xurgonic Cool, thank you, that's what I thought... I am like that too, trying to get the CG to look as final as possible before using in a composition...

  • @shadesters It is common to break out a zillion passes, but I prefer to wait for compositors to inform what they actually need. Otherwise I see how CG gets sloppy, comps get overtweaked, and more elements mean more complication and chances for things to go astray way more drive space taken, longer backups, and more crap to track in a database.

  • OMG thats amazing!!!! :D

  • @Xurgonic Very true, I like to keep it simple... thanks for the information!

  • @aresye I see basic Maya house and building tuts on YT. If all you are doing is modeling, you could use any modeling app (LW, Modo, Zbrush) since model formats like 'obj' are universal. But once you get into texturing, animating, rendering, you want to stay in one app. Converting scenes between apps is always a technical mess.

  • @Xurgonic Well, looks like I'll stick to learning Maya in the time being. I'm at a loss for tutorials though. I've watched all the basic tutorials that got me up to speed with creating simple objects, but the other tutorials jump ahead far enough ahead that it's obvious there's a learning step in there that I can't find, ex: I can build a cruddy building out of cubes, but the next tutorials expect me to already know how to build a screwdriver :P

  • @aresye Newtek's plan is always fuzzy, but Lightwave is also due to be discontinued as NT develops Core instead.

  • @Xurgonic Thanks for the very quick reply! Right now I'm leaning towards forking out the money for LW (not a big issue for me post-deployment), but that's only because I don't plan on working in the industry. As an active duty service member, this is more of a hobby. I guess you could say the surge in fan-films with impressive CG is my inspiration, although I know it'll take me 2-3 years to get to that level of proficiency, regardless of program choice.
