For the first time in history, the Big Bend Dam spillway near Fort Thompson, South Dakota opened Friday morning, 3 June 2011, to release flood waters. The spillway will release an additional 15,000 cubic feet of water per second bringing the total dam release to 100,000 cubic feet of water per second.
