Québec a Nation History (Part 4)

The Fall of Huronia
The beginning of the Iroquois Wars

The story of the Jesuits in Huronia and the genocide of the Huron peoples by the Iroquois - Mohawks. The fall of Huronia enabled the Iroquois to concentrate their subsequent war efforts on the French settlements in the St. Lawrence Valley.

The wars were extremely brutal and are considered one of the bloodiest series of conflicts in the history of North America. The resultant enlargement of Iroquois territory realigned the tribal geography of North America, destroying several large tribal confederacies including the Hurons, Neutrals, Eries, and Susquehannock and pushing some eastern tribes west of the Mississippi River.

It was the beginning of the beaver wars, also called the Iroquois Wars or the French and Iroquois Wars, commonly refer to a brutal series of conflicts fought in the mid-17th century in eastern North America. Encouraged and armed by their Dutch and English trading partners, the Iroquois sought to expand their territory and monopolize the fur trade and the trade between European markets and the tribes of the western Great Lakes region. The conflict pitted the nations of the Iroquois Confederation, led by the dominant Mohawk, against the French. It is during that war that occured the Battle of Long Sault and that Dollard des Ormeaux became a Hero.

  • huron is a" bad word given to wyandot-from french "huronne'-means "unkempt" dishevelled"-iroquois is negative woed "real adders" given to the "haudenosaunee" (people of the LONGHOUSE -A MATRIARCHY CULTURE)

  • @lmollot I honestly don't know how to say it in english but a "Hure" is something on the head of the wild boar in France. The Wyandot haircut was similar to the Hure of those wild boar. I think the word can be associated with wild or savage. From what I heard the word Iroquois come from the Basque word "hilokoa" it means killer people. Basque were the first European to trade with the Iroquois. Mohawks means "Man-eater" in Algonquin, but the Mohawks probably like the english word "Hawks".

  • @lmollot Huronne is a feminine word, in the past it was probably comparable to the current word "Cochonne", it means female-pig. Today a "Cochonne" is a women that love sex, a nymphomaniac.

  • I feel so terrible about what happened to these beautiful and proud people. I wish Canada would have a Native history day or something so we can learn more about them and help native groups around the country so they can protect their way of life.

  • Did the Natives wore trousers?

I thought they only wore leggings and loinclothes!!

  • I am proud to be Métis

  • @Patriote17

You said the Bible is "shitty", yet you call yourself un patriote québécois?

  • @Patriote17 I thought these lands were the last settled across the land bridge from Asia, some 4 thousand years before this invasion? I don't know why writing would be important to a culture that did not need it? I don't know much about the Bible, I only see it's effect on people. I think the Huron suffered greatly in this close relationship with the French, maybe many factors, the free Mohawk did not, then.

  • @Patriote17 Way to go though! I understand the land is harsh, maybe thats why these lands were the last settled across the land bridge? Allowing the Europeans to grow and settle, become embedded and fortified, skilled and allied, connected and reinforced. Maybe they Mohawk moved on them to late?

  • @TheSchutes life was hard in the past, hundreds died from cold, you had to hunt and fish to eat and if the season was bad you die. No human are indigenous to Québec, living here was extremly hard. Like they used to say in Québec you don't live you try to live, you survive. This land is hostile to men. French show the natives how to read and write, history is writting, it is important for sharing the knowledge from generation to generation. Bible is shity, but the word of Jesus is respectable.

  • The Huron always distinguished themselves as great warriors later on. Hands down the Ojibwe were among the best Native Canadian fighter, though.

  • Terribly sad part of Canadian history

  • Man fucking Iroquois. The Huron were awesome.
